All Persian rugs and carpets require cleaning in order to maintain the condition of the carpet as well as for hygiene purposes. How often your carpet needs washing will depend on the use of the carpet. Carpets should be washed in such a way that all dirt and dust is thoroughly removed, at the same time ensuring the least possible damage to the carpet.
At the Persian Carpet Studio we use the traditional technique of hand washing carpets. This is the most appropriate technique for caring for all handmade pieces, in particular silk and antique carpets and rugs.
Repair
To ensure the longevity of your rug it is very important to attend to necessary repairs as quickly as possible. If you notice any holes or fraying do not put off the repair job, as what may be a relatively simple repair job may become greater, or may if neglected ruin the rug altogether.
The Persian Carpet Studio offers a repair service by professional carpet weavers. Depending upon the size and nature of the repair it may be fixed locally or sent to Iran.

How to maintain your carpet
If cared for properly hand made carpets will last a very long time. Some tips on how to maintain the beauty and quality of your carpets:
- Vacuum your rug regularly, vacuuming gently on low suction following the direction of the pile
- Wash your carpets when needed. Always hand wash your carpets. Do not steam clean.
- If your carpet is constantly exposed to direct sunlight this may result in fading. Use upholstery such as curtains to reduce exposure, and rotate the rug to ensure even colouring.
- Although excessive exposure to sunlight will fade your carpet, every so often it is necessary to place your carpet in the sun for several hours to remove moths and destroy signs of mould. While the carpet is airing in the sun sweep or brush it gently.
- Do not place pots and plants on your carpets
